Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) Counseling

Anxiety is a normal life experience. You may have felt anxiety doing school work, before making an important decision, on a rollercoaster, or addressing a problem at work. It is temporary worry or fear, and will go away once the stressor is gone. People with GAD experience anxiety that does not go away and may get worse over time even after the stressor is gone.

GAD consists of the following symptoms:

  • Excessive anxiety or worry for most days for the past 6 months
  • Difficulty controlling their worry
  • Feeling restless, wound up, or on-edge
  • Being easily fatigued
  • Difficulty concentrating or one’s mind going blank
  • Being irritable
  • Having muscle tension
  • Sleep difficulty, such as trouble falling or staying asleep, restlessness, or unsatisfying sleep

Treatment for GAD

Psychotherapy has been shown to be effective for people with GAD. Evidence-based therapies include Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Exposure Therapy, Stress Management, Relaxation Training, Biofeedback, and Hypnotherapy. Medication does not cure anxiety but can help reduce symptoms. Our clinicians are trained and have experience in providing these evidence-based treatments.

“My daughter has been talking with Shayna for anxiety issues and she has been amazing. Shayna has been able to provide so much advice, so many ways to cope with and how to deal with the anxiety when it is an issue. Highly recommend her for younger kids.”
